Best Day Of 2008
As you all should know by now. We, Relient K, had the honor to play The Tonight Show with Jay Leno the other night. The show aired that night, so I hope everyone got a chance to watch it. Playing the show was so exciting! The guys have done it twice before, but this was my first time. I wasn’t nervous until I looked up at the TV monitor and saw that they started taping. 45 min. later we were on. I got on the drum riser during the break and was sooooo nervous. Once the Thissen finished his intro, I felt great and after watching the show later that night at the hotel with my wife, I felt even better.
You may have noticed and maybe knew before, but Tom Wilson accompanied us on acoustic guitar! Let me give you a quick history…Jon Schneck and I were talking one day about how much we loved Tom Wilson’s work in Back to the Future, Freaks & Geeks, his stand up…etc. We thought to figure out a way to contact him. So, later that day, I went to his site and go figure…”Contact.” Duh! The next morning I got a reply from Tom himself. Schneck proceeded to do the same with the same result. We were beside ourselves! Turns out that he and his family are HUGE Relient K fans! Fast forward…On our fall tour, we all talked about the idea of Tom playing with us on Leno. At first, he couldn’t and then he could do the show. Ok, back to the other day…Tom showed up at rehearsal time, we all met in person and ran through the song a few times. He played it flawlessly! Good work Tom!!
The rest of the day until taping was such a good time. We all had lunch with Tom and he shared stories about Back To The Future, Freaks & Geek and so on. He’s one of those people that you feel like you’ve known all your life, right away! Tom’s kids were able to come to the show as well. They had a great time and I gave Tommy, Tom’s son, the drumsticks I used during the taping. He is learning drums so I thought he would like that. So, there are probably more things I could tell you about the day but it’s still a blur. Oh yeah, aside from meeting the guests, I met Fred Willard!! I’m a huge fan of his work in all the Christopher Guest films and Fernwood Tonight. Thanks to all my friends who came out to the taping…Ryan Downey, Dylan Johnson, Adam Dudley, Andy Barron and thanks to Rodger at Battlefield Drums for providing me with a sweet kit for the show!
Ok, that is all. Here are some sweet photos from the ever so talented Jered Scott…

Wow, great photos! Kudos to Jared. Did he really take the last one? LOL (I guess it could have been with a timer.) Did he take the black and white at the top also? I think I like that one best, although the one of you by the dressing room is stellar.
By the way, I loved the new band member. I fell asleep at my desk about 20 mins before the show was supposed to start, but then woke up about 10 mins. before you played. Then I rewatched it on the big tv downstairs this afternoon. Excellent performance.
I’m so glad it was a good experience for you. You didn’t look at all nervous, and I absolutely loved your attire, especially the cap.
